WATERLOO - John F. Schiel, 89, of 800 Newell St., died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at his daughter's home in Waterloo of cancer.

He was born Jan. 26, 1911, in Waterloo, son of Louis and Lillian Hasbrouck Schiel. He married Thelma M. Foutch May 2, 1936, in Waterloo. She died Nov. 22, 1990.

Mr. Schiel was self-employed as an auto mechanic and television and radio repair man for many years.

Survived by three sons, Williams of Burbank, Calif., Michael of Phoenix and John W. of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Cathy Poots and Susan Jacoby, both of Waterloo; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Fred and Joseph, both of Waterloo, and the Rev. Nicholas, a missionary in Honduras; and a sister, Virginia Hill of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by a brother, Francis; and five sisters, Alice Schiel, Marcella Gerst, Viola Holbach, Agnes Nolan and Anna Fenelon.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. senior citizens rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
