Michael Theodore Staebell, 93, formerly of Jesup, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo.

Mike was born May 19, 1919, at Dunkerton, Iowa, the 12th child of Mike and Mary (Nuebel) Staebell. He married Mary Jane Marron on April 26, 1947, at Waucoma.

Mike and Mary Jane farmed near Dunkerton and then Jesup, raising their seven sons and one daughter, Tom Staebell (Jan) of Sidney, British Columbia, Canada, Steve Staebell (Becky) of Oquawka, Ill., Gerry Staebell (Vicki) of Jesup, Mick Staebell of Waterloo, Dan Staebell (Vicky) of Onalaska, Wis., Andy Staebell (Wendy) of Mendota Heights, Minn., Christopher “Chip” Staebell of Sterling, Ill., and Maureen Ellingson (Todd) of Jackson, Wyo. In addition to his children, he is survived by 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his 11 siblings; his great-grandson, Kaiden Robert Staebell; and his wife of 64 years, Mary Jane, who passed away on July 17, 2011.

Mike was always known for his friendly and outgoing spirit and the love of music, which he instilled in his children. Mike was actively supportive of St. Athanasius Church and School in Jesup, along with Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of many other organizations.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be a Knights of Columbus rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Saturday at the church. The family has requested memorials be given to St. Athanasius Church in Jesup, Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville or to Hospice Compassus.
