Ernest A. Schmit, 69, of Jesup, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, of pancreatic cancer.

He was born Oct. 9, 1943, in Waterloo, son of Lawrence Jacob and Mildred Schares Schmit. On Jan. 16, 1967, he married Janie Elizabeth Delagardelle at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville.

Mr. Schmit graduated from Don Bosco High School, Gilbertville, in 1962, and had served in the reserves for the U.S. Marines from 1964 to 1970. He was employed by John Deere Tractor Works, Waterloo, in the maintenance department. He also farmed in the Jesup area. He was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup.

Survived by his wife; three daughters, Renae (Duane) Fenske of Fairbank, Brenda (Joel) Schares of Washburn and Leah (Joseph) Reiter of Waterloo; a son, Eric A. (Shelly) of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; seven brothers, LeRoy (Joan), Cleo (Evelyn), Neil (Patti), Earl (Cindy), Duane (Annette), Alfred (Lisa) and Clyde (Brenda), all of Jesup; and three sisters, Darlene (John “Jack”) Weber of Raymond, and Audrey (Brad) Huff and Mary Ann Schmit, both of Marion.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with burial in the church cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714 of Gilbertville. Visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Jesup, where there will be a 1:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to St. Athanasius Church and School, the Bosco System, Jesup Public Library, Link-Cedar Valley Hospice and to pancreatic cancer research.
