Brooke Kerns, 38, of Oelwein, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born Feb. 21, 1967, in Lancaster, Wis., daughter of Richard W. and Rebecca Roever Bixby. She married Michael John Kerns on March 31, 1996, in Las Vegas.

Mrs. Kerns was a 1985 graduate of Cedar Falls High School. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City; and her master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, where she was currently working on a Ph.D. She was employed as director of athletic training education at Upper Iowa University, Fayette. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband; her mother of Cedar Falls; her father and stepmother, Richard and Mary Bixby of Galena, Ill.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Sherry Kerns of Oelwein; a brother, Ryan (Jen) Bixby of Erie, Colo.; a stepsister, Jill (Brett) Wilson of Cedar Rapids; a stepbrother, Mike Miller of Key West, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Lisa (Paul) Novak of McKinney, Texas; maternal grandmother, Ethel Roever of Janesville; paternal grandfather Ray Bixby of Waterloo; uncles, Bruce (Becky) Bixby of Clarksville and Kermit Roever of Janesville; aunts, Carolyn (Darrel) Bell of Lone Tree and Verlinda (Bill) Stokes of Janesville; and numerous cousins.

Preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Isabel Bixby; and maternal grandfather, Kermit Roever.

Services: were 11 a.m. Saturday at Williams Center, Oelwein, with inurnment later. Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial fund has been established.

Even though Brooke had no children of her own, she considered her students and many close friends to be an important part of her extended family.
