[Waterloo Courier, Wednesday, December 6, 1882, Waterloo, Iowa]

DIED.—We last week referred to an accident which happened to Edwin ant Dexter Carpenter, who were burning lime at Cedar Falls. The Gazette of last Friday has the following addition of particulars:

"The kiln becoming clogged, the boys went up on tho top to force the stone down, stamping with their feet. The result was that the whole mass be came loosened and fell into the fire below, carrying the boys with it and wedging them fast among tho hot lime stones. Edwin managed to scramble out by leaving his boots in the fire and finally succeeded by the same means in rescuing his brother. The latter was badly burned about the lower limbs and his pants were on lire. Edwin procured a pail of water, and in the hope of quenching the flames throw it upon his brother's clothing. This did not help matters any, as the steam scalded Dexter's limbs and increased his sufferings. Assistance was procured, and the boys were brought home. Dexter's feet, legs and hips were found to be severely burned. Edwin sustained no injuries with the exception of his right hand being considerably burned. The physicians have now decided to cut Dexter's left leg off above the knee."

Since the Gazette was published we learn that the operation referred to was performed Friday, and young Carpenter died a few minutes afterwards. He was 24* years of age, and was an exemplary young man.
