[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Friday, September 15, 2006]

Dr. Heinz Siegmund Jacobi was born Oct. 30, 1924, in Berlin, Germany, to Drs. Rudolf and Elsa Cohn Jacobi. In 1933, the family migrated to Palestine (now Israel) where his father practiced surgery in Haifa. In 1947, Heinz began medical studies in Switzerland where he met and married Patti Muller in Bern. In 1953, they came to Brooklyn, N.Y., for his internship, and in 1954 they began four years of surgical residency in Des Moines, followed by surgical practice in New Hampton and Waterloo, where he retired July 1, 1991.

Dr. Jacobi was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 54 years and five children, Daniel of Des Moines, David of Bozeman, Mont., Deborah (Chris Petersen) of Winneshiek County, Dinah (Eric) Olson of Oswego, N.Y., and Liz Jacobi (Terry Bergen) of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are his brother, Joachim (Mira) Jacobi and their children, Doron and Raja, of Israel; grandchildren, Adam and Ben Jacobi, Allison and Neal Jacobi, Arlo and Zeida Olson, and Ella Bergen.

He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, and a past president of the Iowa Academy of Surgery, Throckmorton Surgical Society and the Iowa Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

Over the course of his life, Dr. Jacobi pursued many and varied interests. As a youth he hunted with his father and brother, including trips to neighboring Lebanon where he also learned to ski. He boxed for a time and in fencing was runner up in the Israeli Championship, taking second to his teacher.

While in Switzerland, he learned to fly, logging training hours by towing gliders, and also getting his own glider pilot license. He further pursued his love of skiing in the Swiss Alps, accompanied at times by his American girlfriend, Patti. In addition to descending the Alps on skis, he ascended them on motorcycle. He was the first person to reach the Eiger Glacier by motorcycle.

He was delighted to find that the Midwest held more birds than people and that he could easily pursue hunting and fishing there, a passion he passed on to his sons. He joined the flying club in New Hampton, and to ease into retirement, helped build a small plane. He found his own piece of the beautiful Iowa landscape in Winneshiek County, where "the farm" provided countless hours of enjoyment.

He maintained many strong friendships over the years, touched many lives through his practice and will be greatly missed.
