WATERLOO - Mearl I. Cline, 86, of Waterloo, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at home.

He was born Dec. 7, 1921, in Berthold, N.D., son of Christopher Columbus and Viola Dokken Cline. He married Lila Anderson on June 12, 1942, in Sydney, Mont.

Mr. Cline was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps and was a prisoner of war after being shot down over Germany. He was employed with Paul Christensen Construction Company for many years.

Survived by his wife; a son, Michael (Nancy) of Metamora, Ill.; six grandchildren, David M. Cline II, Tamara L. Cline Gafford, Christopher M. Cline, Stephen M. Cline, Scott D. Cline and Jennifer N. Cline Leman; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a son, David; a sister, Leona; and a great-great-granddaughter, Hannah Elizabeth.

Memorial services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church, with inurnment in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale Amvets Post 31 and Waterloo Amvets Post 19. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street.

Memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association.

Mearl was a voracious reader, an avid gardener and card player, and a member of Grace United Methodist Church for 55 years. He was a gifted mechanic who tirelessly helped his friends and family, and he will be remembered most for how much he loved them.
