WATERLOO - Richard W. Smith, 84, of Waterloo, died Monday, March 10, at Allen Hospital.

He was born March 13, 1923, in Waterloo, son of Harlan G. and Nancy L. Obiel Smith. He married Bonnie L. Marguand in May 1942 in Louisiana. They later divorced. He then married Ida Yearling in 1993.

Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was employed at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 32 years, retiring in 1980.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Richard E. (Nancy) of Waterloo and Robert A. of Aitkin, Minn.; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a son, Ronald; a daughter, Nancy Smith; two brothers, Albert and Melvin Smith; and a sister, Nancy Smith.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Inurnment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday and for an hour before services Friday at the funeral home.
