WATERLOO - Gerald “Jerry” James Henderson, 76, of Waterloo, died at home Sunday, Dec. 15, due to complications of congestive heart failure and respiratory failure.

He was born May 25, 1937, in Charles City, son of Orrin and Dorothy Henderson. He married Nancy Knipp on April 15, 1961, in Waterloo.

Mr. Henderson served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Shangri La, CVA 38. He worked for Takin Brothers Transfer and Storage, Burch & Lehman Moving Co., and at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 33 years, retiring in 1993. He had been a volunteer at Northeast Iowa Food Bank and the Salvation Army kitchen. He drove the Sunday school bus for several years at Sunnyside Temple. He was a member of UAW Local 838.

Survived by his wife; three daughters, Kristy (Ken) Ruddy of Waterloo, Deborah Smock (Bill Spears) of Cedar Falls and Lynnette Henderson (Lawrence Burgs) of Des Moines; a son, Mark of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Megan, Makenzie, Brody and Shelby; three great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Tommy and Carter; two brothers, Don (Rita) of Waterloo and Bob of Greeley, Colo.; and his cat, Kitty.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Katharine G. Pahl Memorial Chapel at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, with burial in the cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service.

Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
