GILBERTVILLE - Leander Thoma, 93, died peacefully in the company of his family at Rosewood Estate, Waterloo, on April 26, 2009. The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, at Immaculate Conception Church, Gilbertville, with the Rev. Dennis Colter officiating, and burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Gilbertville.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 28, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, and for an hour preceding services at the church. There also will be a 4 p.m. rosary by the Catholic Order of Foresters and a 7 p.m. Scripture service, both at the funeral home.

Leander was born Oct. 9, 1915, in Stamford, Neb., son of Philip and Josephine Kass Thoma. He married Augusta Nie on June 12, 1940, at Immaculate Conception Church, Gilbertville. Together they farmed in Black Hawk County. After retirement, Leander and his wife spent winters in Mesa, Ariz. He enjoyed spending time with his family and woodworking. He was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include sons, Theodore (Rose Ann), James (Mary) and Philip (Julie), all of Jesup, and Robert (Michelle) of Independence; and daughters, Monica Magee (Don) of Cedar Rapids, Agnes Slifka and Angela Dodge (John), both of Waterloo, Lucia Ludolph (Tom) of Silver Bay, Minn., and Theresa Stessman of Washburn. Leander also is survived by a sister, Bertha (Don) Gibbons of Waterloo; brothers, Claudius of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Joseph (Lorraine) of Fort Collins, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Thoma. Leander is survived by 39 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Augusta, in 2005; sons, Charles and Daniel; a son-in-law, Jerry Slifka; and one great-granddaughter, Taylor Rae Thoma. Also preceding Leander in death were brothers, Nestor (Emma), Roland and John (Betty); and sisters, Sara Thoma, Sister Josephine Thoma OSU and Margaret (Les) Simmons.

Memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception Parish or Don Bosco High School.
