Richard Clair Briden, 90, of Janesville, Iowa, passed away on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice of Waverly.

Richard was born March 13, 1919, in Traer, Iowa, the son of Cecil and Edna (Lamb) Briden. After the death of his mother, he spent his early childhood with his grandparents in Galva, Illinois. Dick returned to the Janesville area in 1932 and graduated from Janesville High School with the class of 1937. After high school, Dick worked on several farms in the area. In 1941, he joined the Army and served his country overseas in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy during World War II. On Oct. 13, 1946, Dick married Iona Eickelberg. They raised their family and farmed West of Janesville. He drove school bus for the Finchford School for several years. Iona died in 1969. Richard married Evelyn Mooney in 1971. After Richard and Evelyn retired from farming in 1983, he could be found many Tuesdays socializing at the Waverly Sale Barn and attending local farm sales on Saturdays. He loved playing cards and games with family and spent many hours working jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, and word jumbles. He was an active member of the American Legion in Janesville and a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Janesville.

Survivors are his wife, Evelyn, one daughter, Edna (Mel) Haskovec of Waukon and one son, David (Jane) Briden of Janesville. Four stepdaughters: DeLores (Bob) Vasey, Union; Ada Sizemore and Ardis Mabe, Eldora, and Joan Mooney, Gifford, and one stepson: Don (Marilyn) Mooney, Gladbrook. He has three grandchildren, Melena (Jesse) Urbanowski of Cedar Rapids, Beth Haskovec of Milwaukee and Bill Haskovec of Ames, and one great-grandson, William Urbanowski of Cedar Rapids. Richard has 11 stepgrandchildren, 15 stepgreat-grandchildren, and 3 stepgreat-great-grandchildren. His beloved brother and sister, Elbert Briden of Janesville and Dorothy Frazee of Denver.

In death he has rejoined, his parents; his first wife, Iona; a stepson, Floyd Mooney and a stepgreat-grandson, Matthew Platt.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Irving Sandberg from Messiah Lutheran Church in Janesville officiating. Burial will follow in the Finchford Cemetery, rural Janesville, with flag presentation by the Janesville American Legion, Post 522. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, Iowa.
