Mother, Daughter Killed in Charles City Fire

CHARLES CITY - An unattended candle is to blame for an early morning house fire Saturday that killed a young mother and her daughter.

Charles City firefighters arrived at 502 17th Ave. just before 6:30 a.m. and found flames coming from the front of the house. They entered in the back, where they found the bodies of Lisa Mohring, 21, and her 1-year-old daughter, Addison Wilharm.

Autopsies will be performed in Mason City. An investigation by Charles City police and fire departments and the Iowa State Fire Marshal determined the fire was and accident. It originated in the house's living room.

The house sustained heavy fire and smoke damage throughout. A neighbor, who declined to share her name, said the house's windows were broken out and there appeared to be more smoke than flames.
