Ernest Oltman, 85, of Waterloo, formerly of Dike, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa of natural causes. He attained the age of 85 years, 10 months and 13 days.

Ernest was born October 1, 1914, in Allison, Iowa, the son of Dick and Alice "Swygman" Oltman.

Ernest attended country school in Butler County until the eighth grade. He joined the Army Air Corps in July 1942 and served until December 1945.

He was united in marriage to Ada Goldthorpe on November 12, 1945 in Ashton – Under – Lyne Lancashire, England. Ada passed away in 1985. Ernie farmed for 35 years and retired from farming in 1976. He also ran a custom corn shelter for 10 years and did carpentry work. Ernie worked for the University of Northern Iowa as a custodian for 12 years.

On April 30,1988, Ernest married Mary Duncan in Waterloo, Iowa. Ernie was a member of the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland, where he served as an Elder, Deacon, Usher, and was handy with church repairs. He was a member of the Dike American Legion Post No. 471.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ada in 1985; a son, Gerald Oltman in 1978; three brothers, Dick Oltman Jr., Reiner Oltman, and John Oltman; two brothers-in-law, Sam Dreeseman and Henry Druvenga; a sister-in-law, Anna Mae Oltman.

Survivors include his wife Mary of Waterloo; two daughters, Anne and her husband Larry Lampe, and Lois Marienau of Cedar Falls, Iowa; two sons: John and his wife Karen Oltman of Cedar Falls, Iowa and James Oltman of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a stepson: Gary and his wife Lucy Duncan of Waterloo, Iowa; and a step daughter, Linda and her husband Sam Ginn of West Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren, Terry Lampe, Brenda Chase, Sheryl Stockdale, Jennifer Oltman, Dan Oltman, and Kevin Oltman; six stepgrandchildren, Heather Ginn, Elizabeth Ginn, Logan Ginn, Mason Ginn, Julia Duncan, and Dayton Duncan: four great-grandchildren, Joshua Chase, Zachary Chase, Christopher Stockdale, and Allie Stockdale; a brother, Ben and his wife Hilda Oltman of Parkersburg, Iowa; four sisters, Helen Druvenga of Parkersburg, Iowa, Trena Dreeseman of Dike, Iowa, Fannie Bruns and her husband William of Dike, Iowa, and Jadean and her husband Jim Tripp of Reinbeck, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Frances Oltman of Stout, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 130 p.m. Thursday, August 17, 2000, at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Russell Muillenberg and Pastor Marvin Cleair of the Kimball Avenue Church will officiate. Full military rites will be conducted by the Dike American Legion Post No. 471. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the Dike Funeral Chapel.

A memorial fund has been established. The Dike Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Directions to church from Parkersburg: South on Highway 14 for 7 miles then 2 miles west.
Directions to church from Dike: West on Highway 20 to intersection with Highway 14. North 1 mile and 2 miles west.
