William Herman Hein, 99, of Dysart, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton, following an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 23, 1910, in Fairbank, son of Franz and Albertina Kamrath Hein. On Dec. 1, 1930, he married Elizabeth Beehner at the Lutheran Church, Independence. She died Oct. 2, 2003.

Mr. Hein farmed, then worked for Gamble-Robinson and Nash Finch, Waterloo. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II, then worked as a foreman at Rath Packing Co., Waterloo, retiring in 1971. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Dysart, and Dysart American Legion.

Survived by two sons, Robert (Sandra) of St. David, Ariz., and Richard (Lois) of Dysart; three daughters, Beverly (Ralph) Buck of Ponca City, Okla., Arlene (David) Linstrom of Boone and Jane Ellen (Craig) Karr of Dysart; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a grandson, Bradley Buck; six brothers; and seven sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Dysart, with burial in Gnagy Cemetery, rural Dysart. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Dysart American Legion. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Overton Funeral Home, Dysart.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

In his free time, you would find Bill enjoying coffee with his friends at John's Quick Stop or driving around checking things out around town. He also spent many hours working in his garden or woodworking.
