[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Sunday, December 1, 2013]

John Pershing Martin, Sept. 1, 1918 to Nov. 28, 2013.

Survived by his devoted and loving wife of many years, Virginia Lou Martin (Strayer); daughters Linda Estrem, Carol Price, and Peggy Sorrell, all of the Twin Cities; many grandchildren and great grandchildren who adored him, along with nieces and nephews, and special nephew, Joe Martin and his wife Teri from Waterloo, who have been a tremendous help and blessing to him and his family over the last few years.

He is preceded in death by his son, James Louis Martin.

Johnny, as his friends and family called him, was an avid hunter and fisherman. He retired from a career at John Deere while still young enough to enjoy many summers at their trailer on Lake Hattie, where they made many dear, life-time friends. He also enjoyed photography, taking thousands of photos of family and friends, a great legacy of memories for his family to enjoy.

Johnny was also an expert woodworker and his daughters’ homes are full of tables, shelves, stools, music boxes and just about anything they requested he make for them. All treasures that will be passed down through the generations.

He will also be remembered for his practical jokes and his quirky sense of humor. We can still hear him laughing.

There will be no memorial service, but a private family celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Locke Funeral Home.
