Funeral services for Amanda Beck Pierce, 93, of Waterloo, formerly of the Geneseo area, were held Thursday, April 8 at St. Mary's of Mount Carmel at Eagle Center. She died Monday, April 6, 1999 at Friendship Village Care Center. Officiating at the funeral was Msgr. Paul Steimel. Casket bearers were Louis Beck, Wayne Beck, Alan Beck, Philip Keese, Chris Walsh and Bob Wagner. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Amanda Lillian Peters was born February 16, 1906 to Henry and Rosa Kick Peters in Geneseo Township. She graduated from Geneseo High School in 1925. She then attended Iowa Normal School (UNI) and taught in country school in Benton County. She married Louis Beck September 17, 1929. They farmed in the Eagle Center area until his death November 6, 1954. Amanda moved to Waterloo in 1957 to live with her sister-in-law, Christine Beck, and worked as a nurse's aide on the medical floor at Schoitz Hospital where she was employed until retiring in 1974. She married Al Pierce on November 29, 1974 and moved to his home in Waterloo. The couple moved to Friendship Village in 1989. Al died November 1, 1992.

She is survived by nine children: Donald Beck, Buckingham, Rose Keese, Iowa City, Jim Pierce, Independence, Eileen Schares and Marcy Schmit, Gilbertville, Don Pierce, Ray Pierce and Alice Barr, Waterloo, and Jan Bruns, Cresco; forty-one grandchildren, seventy six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Mask, Dysart.

Amanda was preceded in death by four sisters: Lulu Hark, Anna Jurgens, Mary Fry and Esther Boelender; and four brothers: Albert Peters, Henry Peters, Bill Peters and Ed Peters.

Memorials may be give to St. Mary's of Mount Carmel Church or Friendship Village.

Obit indicates she died a Pierce, but her gravestone is inscribed "Beck, Amanda L. 1906-1999" and she's buried with her first husband Louis.
