WATERLOO - Billy Gene Zwanziger, 82, of Waterloo, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

He was born Oct. 17, 1931, to Wendall and Hazel Zwanziger. Hazel died on Oct. 22, 1931, and he was adopted by his grandparents, George and Lura Zwanziger. He had four brothers and one sister.

Bill was in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. Following the Army, he worked and managed Waterloo car dealerships until he became the owner of Green Acres Mobile Home Sales.

Bill was probably best known for his 50-year racing career. At the age of 17 at Tunis Speedway in Waterloo, he began racing with Gordon Bentley Chevrolet and Jim Cordes Ford. He ended his career with Al Frieden of Cedar Rapids. For the next 20 years, Bill raced from Arizona to Florida and everywhere in between; including Canada. Bill won numerous races, track championships, and a lifelong racing family. Following his retirement from active racing, Bill served as the Director of Competition for I.M.C.A until his retirement in 1996.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Ray Phelps; two grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and his lifetime love and friend, Beverly Ward.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with inurnment in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to National Diabetes Association or the family.
