WATERLOO - Peter K. “Pete” Rice, 69, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013,at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 28, 1943, in Chicago, son of William Ellsworth and Mary Mercy Warren Rice. He married Pauline A. Kramer on Sept. 28, 1968, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Mr. Rice was the safety compliance officer for Warren Transport, retiring in 1997 after 35 years of service. He also was a volunteer reserve officer for the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Department for two years. As a U.S. Navy veteran, he served aboard the USS Chicago (CG-11) during the Vietnam War.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Jaime (Matthew) Hall and Pam (Matthew Magnall) Gee, both of Waterloo; a son, Scott (Christy) of Waterloo; nine grandchildren, Jordan, Tyler, Chandler, Brennen, Jenna, Blake, Dylan, Alexis and Madison; a sister, Jean O’Connor of Jupiter, Fla.; a brother, Ezra (Carol) Rice of Prairie City; and his dog, Maggie.

Preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Thelma Rice; and a brother, William “Billy.”

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Waterloo, with burial in and full military rites in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel, and an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Pete really loved his newspaper route and the customers he served. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
