WATERLOO - Verona Hines, 89, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 20, 1923, in rural Black Hawk County, daughter of Edward and Eleanora Eickelberg Hesse. She married August V. Hines on Oct. 25, 1942, in Klinger. He died April 12, 2009.

Mrs. Hines worked for the Waterloo Community Schools for several years, retiring in 1981. She was the organist at Concordia Lutheran Church and served for a time as the church secretary. She also was an accomplished seamstress. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.

Survived by a daughter, Joan Smith of Waterloo; three granddaughters, Lora Michels of Cedar Falls, Julie (Jeff) Turner of Dysart and Kari Torkelson of Springfield, Mo,; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Marjorie (Elmer) Boehm of Waterloo; and a brother, Virgil Hesse of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Donna; and a son, James in 1966.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Concordia Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel, and an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Concordia Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, 1005 W. Parker St., Waterloo 50703.
