CEDAR FALLS - Hazel Irene Alter, 83, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at Vista Mesa Assisted Living, Cortez, Colo.

She was born Nov. 5, 1929, in Rockwell, daughter of the Rev. George and Eleanore Dirks. She married Bernard Alter on Aug. 3, 1948, at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Parkersburg. He preceded her in death.

For three years early in her adult life, Ms. Alter taught students in multiple grades in one-room country schoolhouses. She later worked for Sartori Memorial Hospital and the Cedar Falls Public Schools.

Survived by a daughter, Jane (Louis) Steele of Durango, Colo.; a son, Joel (Peggy Lexau) of St. Paul, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Aaron (Simone) Steele, Mason (Jamie) Steele, Sarah Steele, Jessica (Steven) Hemenover, and Kevin, Anne and Mary Alter; three great-grandchildren, Izabella and Kaelan Steele, and Maddox Hemenover; two sisters, Ruth Lantosh of Lincoln, Calif., and Janice (Gary) Eisenbeisz of San Bernardino, Calif.; and a brother, Robert (Delores) Dirks of Machesney Park, Ill.

Preceded in death by a sister, Eunice Dirks; and two brothers, Paul and Donald Dirks.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at St. John Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
