GLENN A. TIBBITTS

Services for former Waterloo mayor and postmaster, Glenn A. Tibbitts, 87, are tentatively set for Saturday at Waterloo Memorial Park Chapel.

Mr. Tibbitts died of complications of age at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Memorial Hospital. O'Keefe and Towne Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on April 3, 1888, the son of Alice and Almond Tibbitts. He married Rhea Bradford, on August 7, 1912, who died on August 12, 1972.

Mr. Tibbitts was a tailor by trade, establishing a business in the 1000 block of E. Fourth Street in 1909. He served the first of four terms on the city council beginning in 1921.

He was mayor of Waterloo from 1926 to 1929, leaving that office to become postmaster for four years. He managed the Artificial Ice and Fuel Co. for four years, and from 1939 to 1955 he operated his own coal business at 321 Nevada St.

He was a trustee of the Waterloo Water Works for 24 years and was president for the past 10 years of his service. He was a past president of the Iowa League of Municipalities.

During his service on the city council, he helped establish the first police scout cars in the state, school patrols, and the Waterloo Municipal Airport.

He belonged to many service and civic clubs, and was a more-than-50 year member of the B.P.O. Elks of Waterloo and past elder and trustee of First Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his daughter and former secretary, Mary Alice Tibbitts 301 Walnut Court.
