WATERLOO - Esther Jane Carpenter, 82, of Waterloo, died Friday, April 15, 2005, at ManorCare Nursing Center of natural causes.

She was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Denison, daughter of Lee and Bernice Suiter George. She married Lewis Carpenter July 9, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Carpenter was employed as a housekeeper for the Nadler family for 30 years, retiring in 1984.

Survivors include her husband of Waterloo; a son, Robert (Polly) Graves Jr. of Atkins; two daughters, Nancy (Robert) Gillen of Riceville and Bernice (Robert) Knoke of Waterloo; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald (Lorraine) George of Elk Run Heights.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Clark Reed, and three brothers, Robert, Bill and Leon George.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church on Mulberry Street, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
