CEDAR FALLS - James Leslie Bailey, 84, of Laporte, Minn., formerly of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at his daughters home from complications of Alzheimers disease.

He was born Nov. 2, 1920, in Erskine, Minn., to Robert Orlando "Lan" and Margaret Chandler Bailey. He married Jane May Ames Helgeson of Minneapolis July 2, 1948.

Mr. Bailey graduated from Erskine High School in 1938. He worked as a farm laborer, attended Bemidji State University and then attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a masters degree in business administration. He was assistant business manager and treasurer of the University of Northern Iowa for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife of Laporte, Minn., three daughters, Barbara M. Bailey of Oviedo, Fla., Dr. Beverly (John) Hargraves of Lexington Park, Md., and Dr. Bonnie M. Bailey of Bemidji, Minn.; a brother, Jack (Oralee) of Erskine, Minn., two sisters, Lucille (Don) Hansen of Langley, Wash., and Sarah (Darrell) Hartsock of Clarksville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Patricia (Robert) Moore of Laporte, Minn.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a brother, Robert, and a sister, Edna Bailey.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Walker Community Church, Walker, Minn., with burial in the Bailey Family Cemetery near Erskine, Minn. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Cease Family Funeral Home, Bemidji, Minn.

Memorials may be directed to North Country Hospice, Walker Community Church or the Alzheimers Association.
