Howard Lyon was born August 12, 1923, in Denison, Iowa, the son of Allen L. and Jessie M. (Luney) Lyon. He served his Country in the United States Navy during World War II. He received his both his BS (1947) and MS (1949) degrees from the University of Iowa and completed further graduate work (1962-63) at Iowa. On June 8, 1947, he was united in marriage to Marsha A. McKee in Lincoln, NE.

He was Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern College in Orange City from 1949-1956 and the University of Northern Iowa from 1956-1992 (currently Professor Emeritus). He was a 50 year member of the American Chemical Society, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, member of the Metropolitan Choral and New Horizons Band, and an Elder and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school and was a member of the Chancel Choir.

Howard is survived by his wife, Marsha of Cedar Falls; son, Howard W. (Amy) Lyon of Cedar Falls; daughters, Wendy A. (Robert) Prigge of Atlantic and Stephanie J. (Gregory) Marra of Cedar Falls; grandchildren, Rachel (Joshua) Marra-Hagen and their child, Sabina Hagen, Nathan Marra, Hillary Kirkpatrick, Nick Prigge, Alexis Prigge, Tim Lyon, Jessica Lyon, Emily Lyon, Christopher Lyon, Emily Kaczinski, and Tim Haas; brother, Dr. Donald F. (Jeannie) Lyon of Lime Springs; and sister-in-law, Ruth G. Lyon of Davenport.

Howard died Tuesday, December 7, 2004, at his home in Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and Warren Lyon; and sister, Marilyn DeValois.
