GREENVILLE - A two-car accident in Clay County took the life of a Cedar Falls boy Tuesday afternoon.

Damon Dennis Nelson, 10, of 3931 Jennings Drive, died when the car he was riding in was struck by another car. He had just completed the fourth grade at St. Edward's School in Waterloo.

Also killed in the accident was Anthony Wayne Alspach, 37, of Spencer, a passenger in the same car as Nelson.

Nelson's father, Dennis Gary Patten, 33, of Sioux Rapids, and Damon's 3-year-old sister, Hope Nelson, were injured in the crash. Also injured were Gage Krieger, 3, of Rossie, another passenger in Nelson's car, and Marcia Wilson, 44, of Webb, who was driving the other vehicle.

All of the injured were treated at Spencer Hospital in Spencer and released, according to hospital officials.

Counselors were on hand this morning at St. Edward's School to talk with students, staff said.

According to the Iowa State Patrol accident report, Patten was driving a 1993 Dodge north on 225th Street near Greenville just south of Spencer at 5:50 p.m. when he apparently failed to yield to Wilson's 1985 Ford. Wilson was headed west on 420th Avenue. The Ford struck the Dodge, the report states.

No citations have been issued yet, and the accident remains under investigation by the State Patrol.

Services for Nelson will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward's Catholic Church with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street and an hour before the Saturday service.
