Memorial services for Roy Luther Spears, 82, of 4127 Independence Ave., will be 11 a.m. Friday at the city Church of the Brethren. Private committal services will be Friday morning at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Mr. Spears died Wednesday morning in the Hospice Unit at Schoitz Medical Center.

He was born May 22, 1900, at Tampico, Ind., son of William H. and Lucy A. Blair Spears. He married Doris Francis Aug. 17, 1926, at Waterloo.

Mr. Spears was employed by the railroad and then worked for 11 years as a nurseryman for Meyers and Lumery Nurseries. He was building superintendent at the Waterloo Building until 1943, when he began employment as a tester in the Experimental Department at John Deere Tractor Works. He retired in 1961.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ronald D. Spears of Dundee and Wayne K. Spears of Denver; a daughter, Marjorie E. Burkholder of Overland Park, Kan.; 11 grandchildren and three greatgranddaughters; a sister, Elsie Blair of Eldora; and a stepsister, Zetta Schuman of Mountain Home, Ark.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. Thursday at Parrott & Wood Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
