LA PORTE CITY - Betty Jean Slager, 74, of La Porte City, died at home Wednesday, June 14, 2006.

She was born Dec. 6, 1931, in Hudson, daughter of Edward and Mary Ellen Walker Hilmer. She married E. Harold Slager on Oct. 1, 1951, in Brandon, and they later divorced.

Mrs. Slager was a graduate of Brandon High School and had been employed as a bookkeeper/ salesperson with Empire Gas in Brandon, Perfex in Vinton and most recently La Porte City Lumber. She enjoyed socializing with her bowling teams and Brandon card clubs.

Survived by a daughter, Debra Jean (Dennis) Stancel of Atkins; two grandsons, Ryan and Timothy Stancel; a great-grandson, Maxwell Stancel; a brother, Dwane Hilmer of Dent, Minn.; and special friend, Loren Smith of La Porte City.

Preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Lynn.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Huisman Funeral Home, La Porte City, with burial in Bear Creek Cemetery, rural Brandon. Public visitation from 9 a.m. until services Monday at the funeral home.
