CEDAR FALLS -- H.P. “Jim” McCarter, 89, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at the Western Home Communities Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center.

He was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Nashua, son of John and Elsie Lois Byers McCarter. He married Elna Marie Smith on Feb. 1, 1946, in Cedar Falls. She died Nov. 23, 1994.

Mr. McCarter served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked in the excavation trade with International Union of Operating Engineers. Later he owned and operated McCarter Salvage, Cedar Falls.

Survived by a son, James (Rebecca) of Columbia, Mo.; two grandchildren, Zach McCarter of Hallsville, Mo., and Sarah McCarter Bullard of Ashland, Mo.; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Alta Lydon of Salem, Ore.; and friend, Maxine Van Riper of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.

No services are scheduled. Richardson Funeral Service is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed in his name to the Iowa Honor Flight (SHD Post 730 Waterloo Honor Flight), Western Home Foundation or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Jim recently enjoyed a trip with the Iowa Honor Flight to view the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
