Nicholas C. Herman, 19, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, in Cedar County.

He was born June 9, 1994, in Madison, Wis., son of Andrea and Christopher Herman.

Nick was a second-year student at Hawkeye Community College, Waterloo. He was employed by Iowa Auto Rebuilders, Next Generation Pork in New Hampton, and Whitetail Ridge Outfitters in Tipton.

Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Emery and Stuart Herman, and a sister, Lenora Herman, all at home;, grandparents John and Sharon Herman, and Janette Underwood; and great-grandmother Eleanor Wayson.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Claude Underwood; and an uncle, Jay Underwood.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SYC (Special Youth Challenges—a non profit group enabling special needs youth with opportunities to hunt), Blessed Sacrament Church Communication Fund, or the family.

Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.

Nick was an avid outdoorsman. He was passionate about hunting, fishing, hiking, trap shooting, four wheeling, and generally being out in nature. He loved country music, cowboy boots, trucks, and hanging out with friends. Nick had many special gifts which he was always willing to share with a smile. In this past year he volunteered through Campfire Stories, a hunting show featured on the Pursuit network, to film a SYC hunt in Nebraska as well as a hunt for disabled veterans. He had many circles of friends and will be missed dearly by all.

CEDAR COUNTY (KWWL) - An Evansdale man died after an ATV incident Sunday, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Nick Herman, 19, of Evansdale was reporting missing at dusk on Sunday, and officials started searching for him.

Officials say Herman was using an ATV as he removed tree stands near Buchanan, but at some point during the day, the vehicle rolled on top of him, causing fatal injuries.

Earlier reports indicated that Herman was a hunter, but officials now stress that this was not a hunting incident.

The DNR was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Cedar County Sheriff, Conservation Board and Emergency Management, Tipton Fire, West Branch Fire, Mechanicsville Fire and West Liberty Fire.
