SUMNER - Gregory "Greg" James Buckendahl, 63, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, from injuries sustained after a fall.

He was born Oct. 18, 1949, in Waterloo, son of parents Leo and Marcille Fox Buckendahl. He married Bonnie Mae Wendt in 1971 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sumner.

Mr. Buckendahl graduated from Sumner schools, then served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, earning the rank of E5 Sergeant as a military policeman. He returned to northeast Iowa and took a job as a Bremer County deputy sheriff for several years. He then attended Upper Iowa University where he earned his bachelor's degree in biology and teaching certificate. He worked for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Amy; two dogs; three brothers, Doug (Lou) of Kalama, Wash., and Mike and Dennis; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; and his cat, Nala.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sumner. Visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. today S.K. Rogers Funeral Home, Sumner.

Greg worked hard to preserve Iowa's landscape. He volunteered his time with the Boy Scouts, was a hunter safety instructor and served on the board for Pheasants Forever and Parks Board. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to mentor others.
