CEDAR FALLS -- Vernon Ray Luhring, 75, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

He was born March 6, 1938, in Dike, son of Klaas and Gertie Reiter Luhring. He married Barbara Olin on April 3, 1964, in Cedar Falls; she died Oct. 28, 2007.

Mr. Luhring graduated from Dike High School in 1956; served in the U.S. Army; was associated with John Deere Tractor Works; and farmed in Black Hawk County since 1965. He was a Cedar Falls Township Trustee; a charter member of the Cedar Falls Lions Club; a board member of Black Hawk County Planning and Zoning Commission, and of Black Hawk Mutual Insurance; and was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church.

Survived by two daughters, Jennifer (John) Jacobsen of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jayne (Aaron) Spear of Evergreen, Colo.; four grandchildren, Olivia and Noelle Jacobsen and Zach and Tate Spear; a brother, Marvin (Sue) of Hudson; two sisters, Lois (Frosty) Miller of Austin, Minn., and Debra Luhring of Raleigh, N.C.; and his fiance, Barbara Stevens of Venice, Fla.

Preceded in death by his parents; a son, Allen David; and a brother, DeWayne.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home.

Memorials in lieu of flowers, may be directed to Cedar Valley Lions Club and the church.

In the words of his daughters, “He was an amazing and generous man.”
