CEDAR FALLS -- Lester L. Howard, 84, of Apache Junction, Ariz., formerly of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Desert Ranch Assisted Living in Mesa, Ariz.
He was born Oct. 6, 1928, in Finchford, son of Nathaniel and Ethel Evenson Howard. He married Avis Rose Nadine Spooner on Oct. 21, 1949, in Cedar Falls. She died May 23, 2000. He married Delores B. Gilbertson on Oct. 14, 2000, in Marcell, Minn.
He was employed as a machinist with Viking Pump and later as a tool and die maker with John Deere, retiring at the age of 63.
Survived by his wife; two sons, John of Cedar Rapids and Vincent (Lisa) of Rolling Stone, Minn.; three daughters, Debra (Michael) Wilkinson of Waterloo, Denise (Randy) Bremner of Decorah and Donna (Dave) Canell of Cedar Falls; three stepdaughters, Vicky (Harold) Bahner of Minneapolis, Linda (Greg) Stetler of Washington State and Sherry (Jim) Allmon of California; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and James; two sisters, Eileen Simpson and Ethelyn “Tootie” Webrand; a stepson, Michael Gilbertson; and a stepdaughter-in-law, Glenda Gilbertson.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Bible Church, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Richardson Funeral Service and for an hour before services Friday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Lester believed in strong work ethics and high standards for a job well done. He was always willing to help others; loved wood working, hunting and fishing; and earned his private pilot’s license.
