CEDAR FALLS - Karen Louise Knipp Gilbert, 54, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, July 6, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home of cancer.

She was born June 2, 1952, in Heppner, Ore., daughter of George M. and Lois Marlene Kackley Knipp. She married John T. Gilbert July 31, 1982, at St. Edward's Catholic Church, Waterloo.

She attended St. Mary's Elementary School and graduated from West Delaware High School, both in Manchester. She received her B.A. in social work from the University of Northern Iowa in 1974 and her MSW from the University of Iowa in 1980. She worked for DHS in Fort Dodge for four years and was a school social worker with AEA 267 in Black Hawk County for 25 years.

She was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and School, serving on the board of education. She also enjoyed volunteering as an usher at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center in Cedar Falls.

Survived by her husband; three children, Laura, Alex and Thomas, all at home; five sisters, Kathy Donelson and Kris Meyer, both of Cedar Rapids, Karol (Terry) Johnson and Kim (Al) Cole, both of Manchester, and Karla (Rob) Beadle of Marion; her stepmother, Mary Knipp of Independence; a stepbrother, Donnie (Kris) Reidy of Independence; and three stepsisters, Connie (Roger) Kremer of Ottumwa, Jane (Craig) Jennings of Marshalltown and Susan (Rick) Schoeberl of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by her parents; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with inurnment in Hillside Cemetery at a later date. Public visitation from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
