[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Sunday, September 1, 2013]

Bruce Allen Pratt, of Waterloo, the son of Loren (Shorty) Pratt and Betty VanArsdale, was born on Aug. 8, 1947 in Oelwein. He finished the race of life on Aug. 29, 2013.

Bruce and his wife Jan celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on Aug. 19, 2013. For the majority of those 35 years he was employed by Peterson Contractors Inc. He was a skilled backhoe operator who boasted of the many projects he completed in Waterloo and throughout the state of Iowa. He also “lived the dream” when he owned and managed the former Pat’s Tavern for four years in the 1990’s.

Bruce was the proud father of two children: Jeremy (Jenny Flick) and Megan (Alex Henson), both residing in

Waterloo. Two grandchildren, Marianna Jade Pratt and Lennon Robert Henson, brought smiles to his face every day.

Bruce was raised by his father and stepmother Charlene, and was a big brother to Maureen Epperson (Henry) from Evansdale, Osa Brown (Steve) from Alabama, Chris Pratt from Hudson, Charlie (Chuck) Pratt from Waterloo, Stacy VanArsdale (Shirley) from Waterloo and Chris VanArsdale from Arizona. He enjoyed spending summers in Clayton with his cousins Stephen, Vicki and Craig.

Bruce was also very grateful to share a relationship with his extended family: Denis and Karen Dolan, Brian and Ann Dolan, Maureen and Jodi Fauser, Maggie and Pat Burke, Rory and Rochelle Dolan, Kelly and Jim Pechota, Jon and Lynn Dolan and countless nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces. His best friend, Ron Garcia, enriched his life and made him laugh.

Bruce was a lifelong NASCAR fan, cheering on Darrel Waltrip, Rusty Wallace, and Kurt Busch. He loved hooking in to a large mouth bass on Long Lake in Minnesota, and he played a mean game of eight ball. After retiring, he thoroughly enjoyed bowling on three Senior Leagues at Maple Lanes, and the many new friends he gained made up for the 300 game that eluded him.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 2 p.m. Service of Remembrance. Following the visitation, everyone is invited to join the family at Narey’s 19th Hole for continued fellowship.

Bruce was a simple man who lived life in a simple way. He would be honored if you want to remember him by contributing to a fund his wife intends to use to support families whose loved ones are in the Children’s and Medical Intensive Care Units at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
