CEDAR FALLS — Velma G. Kiefer, 96, of Denver, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Cedar Falls Health Care Center.

She was born Jan. 22, 1917, near Preston in Jackson County, daughter of Frederic and Louisa Hageman Schmidt. She married Ernest L. Kiefer on Nov. 4, 1939, in Waterloo. He died Dec. 29, 1990.

Mrs. Kiefer was a 1934 graduate of Preston High School. She and her husband farmed for many years, and later sold produce at the Waterloo Farmers Market. She was a Senior Companion for several years; a caregiver with Sure Care Services and the Western Home Communities; was the clerk for Mount Vernon Township for 25 years; the woman’s chair of the Black Hawk County Farm Bureau; and was past president of the Mount Hope Church Women’s Society.

Survived by two sons, Lloyd (Myrna) Weiland of Johnston and Douglas (Nancy) Kiefer of Cedar Falls; three daughters, Laura (Emmett) Witte of Schaller, Judith (Duane) Judisch of Cedar Falls and Susan (Wyatt) Reynolds of Norman, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Kyle Reynolds; her twin sister, Vera Sanders; three brothers, Harold, LeRoy and Lester Schmidt; a half brother, George Hoffman; and two half sisters, Charlotte Bogos and Viola Kruse.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, with burial in Garden of Memories, Waterloo. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and an hour before services Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the American Heart Association.
