ELK RUN HEIGHTS - Kent A. Dobson, age 64, of Elk Run Heights, died Feb. 1, 2006. He suffered a heart attack while visiting his sister in Tampa, Fla.

Kent was born June 12, 1941, in Los Angeles, to the late Connelly and Virginia Dobson. He was raised in southern California, spent many youthful summers on Balboa Island, and graduated from Claremont High School (class of 1960), where he distinguished himself as an all-state athlete. Kent served in the U.S. Army from 1964-66 and was stationed in Korea. On May 15, 1967, he married Carol Ann Shelar of Lancaster, Calif.

In 1996, Kent retired from Southern California Edison. In 1985, the company awarded Kent the Jack K. Horton Humanitarian Award after he saved the life of an 18-month-old child who he had discovered unconscious after a near drowning accident.

Kent moved to Iowa in 2000 to be closer to his daughter and her husband (Amy and Robert Fontes) and his two grandchildren (Dezirae and Dakota). While in Iowa, he happily attended his older grandchildren's many activities and spent a month last fall chasing around his one-year-old granddaughter (Liberty) who came for a visit. He also enjoyed his weekly trips to the Meskwaki Casino on the Royal Flush Shuttle. As throughout most of his life, he maintained his love for sports as a dedicated fan. Kent also spent many happy hours seeing the country on his car trips, enjoying regular trips to visit his sister in Florida and his identical twin brother in Washington. Last summer he took a very special trip to meet his youngest grandchild (Charlee) who was just one month old at the time.

Kent is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughter, Jennifer Dobson and her husband Paul Cohen (Seattle); his daughter. Amy Fontes and her husband Robert Fontes (Elk Run Heights); his daughter, Tracie Dobson (Arizona); four grandchildren, Dezirae and Dakota Fontes (Elk Run Heights), Liberty Ransom (Arizona) and Charlee Dobson Cohen (Seattle); his sister, Ann Faalogo and her husband Eric (Tampa); and his twin brother, Brent Dobson and his wife Vernella (Battleground, Wash.). He was further survived by nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

His parents preceded him in death.
