WATERLOO — Charles “Chuck” H. Dalton Jr., 92, of Waterloo died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes. Chuck was born June 30, 1921, in Clay City, Ind., the son of Charles H. Sr. and Ernestine Pierce Dalton.

Mr. Dalton graduated from high school in Waukegan, Ill., in 1939. He received his BS degree in Industrial Economics from Iowa State University in 1948. He married Betty Ann Landgraf July 8, 1944, in Quantico, Va. She died June 23, 2011.

He served during World War II in the 1st Division U.S. Marine Corps in Okinawa. In 1950 he was recalled to active duty to serve again in the Korean War. He was a Captain in the 1st Division at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir for which he was awarded the Bronze Star.

Mr. Dalton started Dalton Hardware in 1949 and it became Dalton Plumbing, Heating and Cooling in 1959. He sold the business to his employees when he retired in 1986. He was a member of First Congregational Church, Waterloo. He was a member of the Waterloo and Cedar Falls Chambers of Commerce and was Waterloo Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year; Waterloo Downtown Rotary; past president of Waterloo Downtown Exchange Club; past president of Waterloo School Board; past president of Iowa Retail Hardware Association; chairman of the board for St. Francis Hospital; and later served on the board of Covenant Health System and was instrumental in the merger of St. Francis and Schoitz Hospitals; lifetime member of Waterloo BPOE No. 290 and American Legion Post No. 138; and active in SCORE counseling small businesses.

He is survived by a son, Charles H “Chip” (Diane) Dalton III of Meadowlakes, Texas, and a daughter, Ann Louise (Steve Swenson) Dalton of Seattle. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Chase Dalton, Jed Dalton, Lars Swenson, Danielle Coulter, Michelle Coulter and Haley Coulter; and a brother, Robert E. Dalton of Mooresville, Tenn.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Dean A. Dalton.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, with flag presentation by the U.S. Marine Corps. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Locke Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a community organization of the donor’s choice.

Mr. Dalton has donated his body to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery.
