WATERLOO — Howard D. Smock, 86, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at NewAldaya Lifescapes, Cedar Falls.

He was born April 4, 1927, in Evansdale, son of Donald Sr. and Margaret Loney Smock. He married Cleo Ann Edge on Feb. 27, 1946, in Evansdale. She died in October 1983. He later married Ellen Brandhorst in June 1984. She died in April 2000.

Mr. Smock served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired as a supervisor from John Deere in 1982 after 37 years. He served as a police officer in Evansdale from 1959 to 1969 and also as Evansdale’s mayor from 1972-1973. After retiring from John Deere, he continued to work many part-time jobs, including giving tours at John Deere Engine Works and later greeting people as a security officer at the Black Hawk County Courthouse. He also was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church, Waterloo.

Survived by three daughters, Cindy (Tim) Staley of Waterloo, Deborah (Tom) Jarnagin of Marysville, Wash., and DeeAnn (Jim Koch) Simmons of Oshkosh, Wis.; two sons, Dean (Judy) and Kent (Kim), both of Evansdale; a stepdaughter-in-law, Sandy Brandhorst of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Cathy (Bill) Cox of Florida; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren (plus two more on the way); two sisters, Maxine Stern of La Porte City and Arlene (Dick) Kern of Florida; his special friend, Judy Gray of Dunkerton, and her two daughters, Tammy and Jennifer and their children.

Preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jodi Aufdencamp; a stepson, Terry Brandhorst; a sister, Carol Jean Tabor; and four brothers, Donald Jr., Darrell, Lloyd and Merlin.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church, with inurnment in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date, following cremation. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel, and also an hour before services Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church.
