WATERLOO — David Harold Backerman, 71, of Hope Mills, N.C., formerly of Waterloo, died at home Saturday, July 27, 2013.

He was born Nov. 7, 1941, in Black Hawk County, son of Harold and Gwendolyn Backerman.

Mr. Backerman was a veteran of the Vietnam War and retired from the U.S. Navy after over 20 years of service.

Survived by his wife, Rolene Backerman; a daughter, Cheryl Patrick of Hope Mills; a sister, Marilyn (Mark) Trunnell of Cedar Falls; a brother, Ernest (Jill) of Shellman Bluff, Ga.; two grandchildren, Emilie Patrick and Joshua Patrick; two nieces, Katharine Trunnell Heubner and Megan Trunnell Brummer; and three nephews, James and Tyler Trunnell and Jeff Backerman.

Memorial services: 7 p.m. Thursday at Highland Baptist Church, Hope Mills, preceded by an hour of visitation. Pinecrest Funeral & Cremation Services, Hope Mills, was in charge of arrangements.

David was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
