Second Blast
Victim Dies

Cecil Buttolph, 32, of 700 Wallgate Avenue, died at 7:02 p. m. Sunday at Schoitz Memorial Hospital three days after he was severely burned in a fire and explosion in his home.

His son, Cecil Lee, Jr., 3, died at the hospital three hours after the blast Thursday. Buttolph remained conscious until the last, hospital attendants said, but he slowly lost strength during his three-day ordeal.

Cecil Lee Buttolph, Sr., was born February 6, 1920, in Riceville, Iowa, the son of G. W. and Golda Buttolph,

He came to Waterloo about 20 years ago and was employed at John Deere Waterloo Tractor works at the time of his death. He married Arlene Dreier in Waterloo. Mr. Buttolph was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

Survivors are his wife, at home; two daughters, Nancy and Gloria, at home; his father, G. W. Buttolph, 1126 Washington Street; his mother, Golda Torney, 107 Vine Street; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Myrtle Torney, 1126 Washington Street; one brother, Donald, Peoria, Ill.; and one sister, Mrs. Maxine Embrey, 1126 Washington Street.

He was preceded in death by his son, Cecil Lee, Jr., last Thursday, and one daughter, Barbara Ann, in infancy.

Funeral services had been planned for the boy at 3 p. m. Monday, but they were postponed after the father died. Double services will be conducted at Our Saviour's Lutheran church at 3 p. m. Wednesday, Rev. Harry Wilke officiating.

Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Boy Dies of Burns, Father Critical

Cecil Buttolph, 32, of 700 Wallgate avenue, remained in "critical" condition at Schoitz Memorial Hospital Friday following an explosion and fire Thursday in his home in which his son, Cecil Lee, 3, was fatally burned.

Cecil Lee died at 4:02 p. m.Thursday after he was burned over his entire body. Firemen, who confined the blaze to the basement and kitchen, reported they found a can of gasoline in the basement which aparently exploded, causing the fire. The boy was in the basement at the time of the blast and it was presumed he was playing with the gasoline.

Both the boy and father were rushed to Schoitz Memorial Hospital in a fire department car, but the little boy died about three hours after the explosion.

Mrs. Buttolph, who was at work at the Rath Packing Co., when the blast occurred, was summoned immediately.

Buttolph was reported to have incurred severe burns on his legs, arms and face.

A next door neighbor, Police Detective Elmer HIghtower, 644 Wallgate, said the boy came screaming up the basement stars after the explosion. Buttolph was in the bathroom.

Mrs. Julia Gullickson. who lives at 708 Wallgate, said Buttolph arreared in the front doorway of the house and that she wrapped the boy in a blanket and took him to her house until the fire department arrived.

Cecil Lee Buttolph, Jr., was born in Waterloo September 8, 1948.

He is survived by two sisters, Gloria and Nancy, at home; his parents, Cecil and Arlene Dreier Buttolph; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Dreier, 102 East Eighth Street; the paternal grandfather, G. W. Buttolph, 1126 Washington Street.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara.

Funeral arrangements are pending at O'Keefe & Towne Funeral Home.
