Julia B. Carper, daughter of Major A. S. Carper, was born in Dallas City, Ill., December 28, 1867. She came to Waterloo, Iowa, with her parents. September, 1882, and resided there until September 1886, coming from there to Des Moines, where she resided until January 24, 1894, at which time she was united in marriage to Geo. Stead, of Waterloo. Iowa, where she has since made her home.

Two children were born to this union; Wayne Carper Stead, age 7 years, and a daughter, Julia, deceased. Mrs. Stead has been in poor health for several years. She came to her parents' home in Des Moines the second week in December 1902, to remain over the Christmas holidays. On the 12th of December she became very ill. The best of treatment and nursing were administered for her troubles, which were kidney disease and resulting in heart trouble, but all without success, and after twelve weeks' great suffering she died at 6:45 o'clock, a.m., March 8, 1903.

Funeral services were held in the home of her parents on Monday, March 9th at three o'clock p.m. The Reverend L. K. Billingsley, pastor of Wesley M. E. church officiated. The address was from the words of Paul —"For me to live in Christ, to die is gain." The remains were taken to Waterloo, Iowa, and buried in Elmwood Cemetery by the side of her daughter.

Julia Carper Stead had hosts of friends, both in Des Moines and Waterloo. She leaves to mourn her loss a husband and son, her father and mother, two sisters, and four brothers.
