Services tentatively are set for Monday at Oppold Funeral Home for Anthony "Tony" Hayes, 19, of San Diego, Calif., and formerly of Waterloo.

Mr. Hayes died at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday in the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, Calif., from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident early Tuesday.

He was born Nov. 4, 1960, in Waterloo, son of James and Elizabeth Ann Smith Hayes. He joined the Navy Jan. 1, 1978. He was a petty officer third class in the Navy.

Surviviors include his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. James Hayes of 136 Valley Road; his mother, Elizabeth Ann
Hayes of 1717 Columbia St.; a brother, James of 326½ Conger St.; a sister, Michelle of Waterloo; two stepbrothers, David Lash of Cedar Falls and Mark Lash of 136 Valley Road; a half-brother, Jeffrey Hayes of 1717 Columbia St.; two stepsisters, Tammy and Renne Lash of Waterloo; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Hayes Sr. of 310 Hammond Ave.; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Esther Smith of 1807 Mulberry St.

The body will be brought back to Waterloo Saturday.

Services for Anthony 'Tony' R. Hayes, 19, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Waterloo, will be 11 a.m. Monday at 0ppold Funeral Home with burial in the Mt. OJivet Cemetery.

He died Wednesday in San Diego as a result of a motorcycle accident.

He was a petty officer third class with the U.S. Navy stationed in San Deigo.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Waterloo Naval Reserve.
