Funeral to Be Wednesday For S. D. Newell, Son of Pioneer

Janesville; la,—Funeral, rites for S. D. (Douglas) Newell, son of the first settler in Washington Township, Black Hawk County, will be conducted at the Newell home near Wlnslow Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Frank Shaffer. Janesville, will have charge. The Masons will participate in the services.

Mr. Newell was born Dec. 26. 1861, at the homestead of his father, James Newell, at the juncture of the Cedar, Shell Rock and East Fork rivers in Washington and Union Townships. He had been a lifelong resident of that community.

His father, noted as a pioneer, was famed also for his attitude toward the Indians, for whom he felt none
of the fear and hostility which most of the early pioneers experienced. He had instead, records which he left and stories of survivors of an older generation confirm, a feeling of brotherhood toward the Red Man, a feeling which he translated into acts. He welcomed the Indians to his home and fields, permitted his children to fraternize with the Indian children and in all ways proved that he really believed the injunction "do unto others as you would they should do unto you."

For his fraternizing with the Indians he was severely criticized by other whites, but he did not permit that to affect his course of action. Whenever an Indian needed friendship or material aid, he got it to the limit of James Newell's resources.

Douglas Newell was the son of the third marriage of the pioneer. His mother was Nancy Ann Howard, whom James Newell married in November of 1857. They were parents of four sons and three daughters.
