EVANSDALE — Kenneth Leroy Dalen, 81, of Evansdale, died at home Monday, July 22, 2013.

He was born July 25, 1931, in Lamont, son of Gordon and Theresa Hall Dalen. He married Nancy Lou Strubel on Aug. 6, 1955, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein.

Mr. Dalen served in the U.S. Army in Germany. He was employed at Rath Packing Co. until it closed in 1984. He then worked in maintenance at the People’s Health Clinic, St. Edward’s Catholic Church and later opened his own small engine repair service in Evansdale. He served as a third ward councilman and was chairman of the Library Study committee that led to the formation of the first Evansdale Library.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Debra Buckendahl of Evansdale and Cheryl (Tom) Spragg of La Porte City; three grandchildren, Joshua Spragg, Crystal Hoffman and Dawn Hamilton; and four great-grandchildren, Kameron, Emma, Bella and Sydney.

Preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Full graveside military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, and assisted by the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
