Man Killed in Accident at Rath's

An accident Monday afternoon at the Rath Packing Company resulted in the death of Raymond J. Richardson, 61, of 2186 Lafayette St.

Officials at Rath said Richardson died of injuries received when he was crushed by a fork lift truck during loading operations at the dock of Rath where he was employed. The accident occurred about 2:15 p.m. Dr. Paul O'Keefe, county medical examiner, said Richardson died of massive crushing injuries to his chest and abdomen.

He was operator of the fork lift and was putting a load of meat into a semi-trailer truck at the dock when the lift truck apparently tipped on him, and an estimated 3,500 pounds of meat as well as the fork lift crushed him, the medical examiner said.
