WATERLOO - Harlan Dean Heise, 79, of Waterloo, died Friday, April 4, at his home of amyloidosis.

He was born July 8, 1928, in Waterloo, son of Earnest Carl and Adeline Nordmeyer Heise. He married his high school sweetheart, Maxine Holder, on Sept. 4, 1949.

He graduated from West High in 1946 and from the University of Iowa in 1949 with a BA in accounting. Following his military service in the U.S Army during the Korean War, Mr. Heise and his wife returned to Waterloo where he continued to work for 39 years for Rath Packing Company, finishing as director of personnel and labor relations at the time of Rath's closure. He retired in 1995 after working for Miller Medical for 10 years.

His volunteer work included being president of Trinity Lutheran Church, Christian Crusaders, West High Band Booster Club and he was a long time member of the West High Pow Wow Club (Parents of Wahawks). He coached and supported youth athletics for more than 40 years as his children played sports throughout the Waterloo area.

Survived by his wife; four sons, Kevin (Kerry) of Seattle, Keith (Katrina) and Kyle, both of San Antonio and Craig (Kathleen) of Denver; a daughter, Caryn (Travis) Stanford of Siren, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Craig Wm. Jr. (Chrissy), Laura, Anneka, Esther and Andrew Heise and Elizabeth, Amy and Trevor Stanford; and a brother-in-law, Robert (Jeanne) Holder of Seattle.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity American Lutheran Church, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Locke Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity American Lutheran Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

He will be remembered for a life dedicated to his family and volunteer community service.
