WATERLOO — Eric J. Mayer, 47, of Tiffin, formerly of Waterloo, died at home Sunday, July 7, 2013 of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 29, 1965, in Waterloo, son of Richard and Jane Royer Mayer.

After graduating from Dysart High School, he attended the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, where he received his bachelor’s degree. He joined the Iowa Army National Guard where he graduated from their physician’s assistant program. He practiced as a physician’s assistant in several communities in Iowa. He retired from his PA practice and the National Guard with 20 years of service as a lieutenant colonel.

Survived by his parents; a sister, Amy Matthews of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, David of Cedar Rapids and Steven (Renee) of Green Bay, Wis.; a niece, Kasey Matthews; a nephew, Koy Matthews; a stepniece, Erin Larson; and two stepnephews, Rob and Brandon Larson.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, Waterloo, where military rites will be conducted by the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Cemetery, Eagle Center. There will be visitation for 45 minutes before the service. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Disabled Veterans National Foundation or St. Edward’s Catholic Church.

Eric was an avid gymnast and coached part time for several years. He enjoyed mountain biking, gourmet cooking and reading from his vast personal library.
