WATERLOO — Mary Elizabeth “Bette” Stern, 91, of Phoenix, formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, July 7, 2013 in Phoenix.

She was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Dinsdale, daughter of Harold and Flossie B. Conkle Hild. She married Leo L. Stern on April 9, 1939, in Waterloo. He died June 26, 2000.

Mrs. Stern graduated from Waterloo East High School and was a member of Sacred Heart parish.

Survived by a son, James (Monica) of Phoenix; a daughter-in-law, Janice Stern of Waterloo; three grandsons, Shaun, Daniel (Amber) and Christopher (Nicole) Stern, all of Waterloo; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by two sons, Larry and Steven; and a grandson, Joshua.

Graveside services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway.

Bette served as a Navy wife for 20 years where her husband’s career took them to homes in New York, Virginia, Bermuda and other locations. She was an avid crafter, enjoyed rock hunting with her family, maintained a large garden and was generous with sharing her bounty. She moved to Phoenix in 2007 to be near her youngest son.
