CEDAR FALLS - Merrill G. Lechelt, 80, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Feb. 15, at his home.

He was born May 2, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, son of Reinhold and Viola Schaper Lechelt. He married Virginia M. Kammeier April 3, 1947, in Britt.

He received his BA from State College of Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa) and his MA from Texas A&M, College Station, Texas. He taught science at Holmes Junior High School until his retirement in 1988.

Survived by his wife; a son, David (Helen) of Blue Grass; a daughter, Dianne (Dennis) Saak of Nevis, Minn.; four grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronald (Nancy) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and two sisters, Frances Ann (Wayne) Lawhorn and Joanne (George) Kesler, both of Lake Mills.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home Chapel. Public visitation for an hour before services Sunday at the chapel. Richardson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home or charity of donor's choice.
