Joseph Thompson

Died at 11:45 Saturday Night After Long Illness

Joseph Thompson, another of Waterloo's old and respected citizens, answered the death call and passed away Saturday night at 11:46 o'clock at his home, 920 South street. The cause of death was consumption of the blood which had made Mr. Thompson an invalid the past year. His sickness during that time has been a gradual wasting away of the whole body. About two weeks ago the disease showed its effect in a more marked degree, and from then until Saturday night at the hour named above, the final summons was expected at any moment. All that earth could give in the way of medical assistance and comfort was given, and the patient sufferer closed his eyes and passed peacefully away, surrounded by his brothers, wife and children.

Joseph Thompson was a man whose death will be keenly felt by all who knew him. He was an upright and honorable citizen and has in his time held many positions of public trust. At the time of his death he was overseer of the city poor of Waterloo and had filled the position with credit for the past eight years.

He was born in St. Joe county, Michigan, in April 1836, being sixty-seven years of age at the time of his death. His early life was spent on the farm in Michigan, where he attended the district school. The book knowledge gained at the county school, coupled with his natural ability and pleasing manner made Mr. Thompson a man to be felt in whatever sphere he moved. October 4, 1860, he was united in marriage to Miss Rhoda H. Smith, and in 1862 they came west and settled on a farm in Mt. Vernon Township, Blackhawk county, Iowa, where they continued to reside until about ten years ago when they moved to Waterloo. In Mt. Vernon township Mr. Thompson farmed in summer and taught school in the neighboring districts in the winter. He held at different times every office in his township and was generally looked upon as one of the strongest men in that section of the county. About ten years ago the family moved to Waterloo.

Mr. Thompson was known best by his pious and generous disposition. He was a member of the First M.E. church of Waterloo and had been a class leader in that society for many years. He won friends easily and the announcement yesterday morning of his death was met with expressions of regret on every hand.

He leaves four brothers, James and George at Omaha; Frank at Hastings, Nebraska; Rev. J.J. Thompson, pastor of the Methodist church at Sheffield, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. John Putnam of Constantine, Michigan; five children, Harold L., at Akron, Iowa; Mrs. C.A. Hall, Davenport, Iowa; Mrs. Neal McDougal, Mt. Vernon township, Blackhawk county; Mrs. Grace Michael, Waterloo; Charles A., Muscatine; and his wife, Mrs. Rhoda Thompson. Al of the above named people are here to attend the funeral and were present when Mr. Thompson died.

The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at the house, 920 South street, at 1 o'clock, and at the First M.E. church at 2 o'clock. Rev. F.L. Loveland, pastor of the church, will have charge of the service, assisted by the former pastor, J.E. Johnson, and Dr. Bissell, pastor of Grace M.E. church. The remains will be buried in Fairview cemetery.
